The "Read On. Get On." campaign to improve literacy in the UK, launched this week by Save The Children, is broadly welcomed by Dig-iT. However, in response to our tweet during a BBC Radio 5 Live broadcast (shown below) that the campaign has overlooked the impact of dyslexia, book industry magazine The Bookseller approached us and other dyslexia organisations to comment further. Read the article containing our feedback here (paragraphs 6 & 7).
If you would like to read our full response, please get in touch and we will send it to you.
Dig-iT is pleased to announce that we're soon to launch an adult dyslexia support group in Tamworth! The adult group will start in Autumn 2014 (venue and start date to be confirmed soon). The new adult dyslexia support group will be free to attend and is an extra service to our regular drop-in sessions. It will offer information on dyslexia traits, a dyslexia screening service, advice and workshops on coping strategies (including assistive technologies) plus information on support in the workplace and in education. The group will also offer an opportunity for dyslexic adults to meet and socialise with others in a supportive and welcoming environment. It will be run by volunteers who themselves are dyslexic and/or have experience of supporting dyslexic family members. To find out more, or to join our adult dyslexia group mail list, please email Julie at [email protected] or call on 0753 451 3338. We look forward to hearing from you! Dig-iT sends many congratulations to Tamworth Enterprise College for being the first high school in the whole of Staffordshire to achieve Dyslexia Friendly 'Enhanced Status' in recognition of the additional breadth of consideration given to co-occurring difficulties associated with dyslexia, such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and memory difficulties. The achievement is no mean feat and is truly an inspiration! See TEC's news item here. We'd like to urge all of Tamworth's school to follow Tamworth Enterprise College's wonderful example and to make it their New Year's resolution for 2014 to work towards Dyslexia Friendly at either 'Full' or 'Enhanced' status. Well done TEC!
