Dig-iT Asked to Comment on "Read On. Get On." Campaign

13/9/2014

The "Read On. Get On." campaign to improve literacy in the UK, launched this week by Save The Children, is broadly welcomed by Dig-iT.

However, in response to our tweet during a BBC Radio 5 Live broadcast (shown below) that the campaign has overlooked the impact of dyslexia, book industry magazine The Bookseller approached us and other dyslexia organisations to comment further.

Just did a quick word search in the report & couldn't find any reference to impact of #dyslexia #bbc5Live @bbc5Live http://t.co/ksOF6OikNY

The Parent Champions campaign, run by the Dyslexia-SpLD Trust, included a two page article in its spring newsletter about Dig-iT and the work we do.

We're so pleased to be recognised in this way by a national dyslexia organisation.

You can have a read of the article here (pages 3-4).

Dig-iT is really excited to announce that we've been shortlisted to receive a grant from Lloyds Bank Community Fund Programme which will help us support more adults and children affected by Dyslexia.

We plan to offer more activities to children and develop our new adult support group. Please spread the word and cast you vote! The more votes we have, the larger the funding we may get. Thank you all in advance!

PS: If you vote by SMS, tweet and via the website, that would be really great!

BDA ePetition Update

6/12/2012

In November 2011 we promoted the BDA campaign to ensure that all teachers have compulsory Dyslexia/SpLD training as part of their Initial Teacher Training (see earlier blog entry).

This campaign closed on 31st October 2012. As the petition raised more than 10,000 signatures, the government responded to it. This response has been posted on the BDA website.

Suffice to say, Dig-iT is disappointed with this response and will be writing to our MP on this matter.

Thanks to all who signed the petition.

Last November we blogged about the BDA's ITT campaign - to persuade the government to include general dyslexia awareness in Initial Teacher Training - and added it to our Campaigns page.

The BDA are stepping up the pressure and have released some campaign videos (see here). Please have a look and sign the petition, if you haven't done so already.

Why We're Here

An article published on the BBC News website yesterday reported on shocking statistics outlined in a report produced by Dyslexia Action called "Dyslexia Still Matters".

For example, 9 out of 10 parents who took part in the survey think that teachers lack awareness of dyslexia.

It is statistics such as these that underline why Dig-iT was set up in the first place.

Dyslexia Action have also started an online petition accompanying the report (which we will be adding to our list of campaigns). Please sign it.

We're backing the campaign and have added it to our new 'Campaigns' page. The campaign includes an e-petition which closes on 31st October 2012. Please join us in supporting the BDA's campaign.
