A Dig-iT led story-telling and story-making initiative called SPLAT! comes to Tamworth on Saturday 15th July to coincide with Tamworth Library’s launch of their Summer Reading Challenge.

Starting at 10:30 in the morning with workshops and talks in St Editha’s Community Hall and Tamworth Library, the event will bring some fun into the idea that stories aren’t just about words, but pictures, films, spoken word, animation and much more.

The day long event will have professionally led workshops on comic book illustration, animation, children’s books, spoken word, video-making and much more. There will also be talks on being an author and film-making.

Details for all activities and any bookings can be found here.

In addition, at St Editha’s Community Hall there will be a Book Fair selling audio books, graphic novels and comic books as well as other stalls and of course, tea, coffee and cakes on sale!

Finally, in partnership with Tamworth Arts & Events and Community Together CIC, in the Castle Grounds there will be an interactive storyteller in the Bandstand and craft activities in the Community Hub.

Visit the SPLAT! website for full details.

TEC Achieves Enhanced Dyslexia Friendly Status

Dig-iT sends many congratulations to Tamworth Enterprise College for being the first high school in the whole of Staffordshire to achieve Dyslexia Friendly 'Enhanced Status' in recognition of the additional breadth of consideration given to co-occurring difficulties associated with dyslexia, such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and memory difficulties.  The achievement is no mean feat and is truly an inspiration!  See TEC's news item here.

We'd like to urge all of Tamworth's school to follow Tamworth Enterprise College's wonderful example and to make it their New Year's resolution for 2014 to work towards Dyslexia Friendly at either 'Full' or 'Enhanced' status.  Well done TEC!

Our very lovely friends at Tamworth Library are working hard to ensure that they have dyslexia friendly books and resources available.

We popped along not so long ago to see how they are getting along and saw this stand.

It contains books with dyslexia friendly print and audio (CD) included.

So, why not nip down and have a browse.

Dig-iT is working with the library to see what else they can offer, so if there's something you think they should be doing, we're sure they'd like to hear from you.

Computers for Beginners Course

6/6/2012

Tamworth Library has kindly offered to host a 'computers for beginners' course for adults who have used Dig-iT and aren't confident with using computers or have never used them before and want to learn the basics.  The course would suit adults who are dyslexic as well as those who are non-dyslexic but want to learn in order to help (or keep up with) the children - and grandchildren!

The course will run on Saturdays for 5 weeks and will be very informal and dyslexia-friendly.  The cost would be £10 for the whole course, or FREE if you receive Job Seekers Allowance or Employment & Support Allowance (ESA).

If you or an adult family member might be interested in taking the course, please email us (office.tamdyslexia@gmail.com) with the name and contact details.  We would need at minimum of 5 people to run the course.  We can then let you know when the course will start and how to enrol etc.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is nervous of computers and wants a gentle and stress-free introduction into how to use them!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Wilnecote High is Dyslexia Friendly

Congratulations to Wilnecote High School for recently getting Dyslexia Friendly Full Status. Stuart Tonks (Head) announced this fantastic achievement in his "School Report" in the Tamworth Herald dated 1st December 2011 (page 22).

We at Dig-iT are delighted with this news and say "Very well done, indeed!". There is a lot of hard work needed to gain this status and shows the commitment the school has to ensuring that all students do the best they can.

As Mr Tonks said "It is helping us to personalise the learning of all students so that they can continue to succeed in lessons and to achieve their full potential".

We look forward to seeing which other Tamworth schools step up to this very important challenge.

Further information: see British Dyslexia Association and Wilnecote High School.
