We're really pleased to announce that Dig-iT has been nominated in our local ASDA community groups competition. The winning group receives a £200 donation! Thanks so much to whoever nominated us. We're really thrilled! Please help us to win by visiting the store and voting for us. Here's a link for the store details. We've just added a gallery page to our website which contains a slideshow of Dig-iT events. We'll be adding more photos every now and again.
Why not go and have a look. Quick apology to all visitors to our website who may have experienced random pop-up websites appearing while reading our website.
We noticed some odd unwanted websites popping up while reading our pages and so contacted Weebly support (the people who we use to provide our website). They got back to us and advised us to remove our recently added website statistics tracker. At the end of November, we added this so that we could see how many visitors we get, where they come from and how many things they read (you may have noticed a little green 'Webstats' picture under the Weebly button at the foot of our webpages). Anyway, while we were getting some interesting information from this, the downside was that this also allowed unwanted advert-type pop-up websites to appear. So we have now removed the webstats and will simply use Weebly's own figures instead (though these aren't very detailed). For those of you that are interested, during the two months that we were using webstats, we found that while most of our visitors come from the UK as you'd expect (89.1% actually) we also got visitors from as far afield as Canada (4.6%) and USA (3.1%), New Zealand (0.7%), Turkey (0.4%), Uruguay, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia (all at 0.2%). The remaining 1.5% of visitors came from europe. So, clearly - as we all know - dyslexia has no borders and can affect anybody. To help celebrate our first year, Dig-iT is holding a Christmas party on 22nd December 2012 at Tamworth's Carnegie Centre for all those who have received support from us, participated in events and supported us along the way! See details on our Events page. Would you like to join us? If so, please get in touch. See our Contact Us page. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all! Join us and sign the #IncludeDesign petition asking the government to include the arts and design in the proposed EBacc (which will be replacing GCSEs). We've added our support to #IncludeDesign and added their campaign to our Campaigns page. In November 2011 we promoted the BDA campaign to ensure that all teachers have compulsory Dyslexia/SpLD training as part of their Initial Teacher Training (see earlier blog entry).
This campaign closed on 31st October 2012. As the petition raised more than 10,000 signatures, the government responded to it. This response has been posted on the BDA website. Suffice to say, Dig-iT is disappointed with this response and will be writing to our MP on this matter. Thanks to all who signed the petition. On Friday 23rd November, Julie and Chris from Dig-iT attended a FREE literacy awareness course at Stonydelph ARCH. It was organised by the Adult Community Learning to bring awareness and guidance to community workers and volunteers to help them support residents who may have literacy issues. Julie said that it was fantastic and urges all public service front-line staff to attend such a course. For information, contact Stonydelph ARCH on 01827 709380. We're pleased to announce that we've just added a brand new page to our website called "Our Friends". It contains links to other groups and organisations that we've connected with. We hope to support each other. Here's the page... Julie, Chair of Dig-iT, had the great honour today of meeting Olympic champion boxer Luke Campbell at the official opening of Tamworth Amateur Boxing Club’s new Corner Post Gym and Education Centre! Luke, who is himself dyslexic, was present at the event to unveil the commemorative plaque along with Tamworth’s Mayor Tina Clements and Managing Director of Drayton Manor theme park, Colin Bryan. Luke stayed all day at the event, demonstrating boxing moves, signing autographs for local school children, boxing club members and their families and having his photograph taken, along with his fabulous Olympic Gold Medal. Having been introduced to Luke with her daughter Lizzie, Julie commented “Luke was lovely. He talked a little about his own dyslexia, saying he struggles a bit with spelling and reading and often has to ask people how to spell their names when he writes an autograph for them. Luke said he is quite open about his dyslexia and he doesn’t let it stop him from doing things, which is just the approach that we at Dig-iT aim to encourage”. Julie explained further “We really enjoyed meeting Luke. He was a real inspiration especially to those, like him, who have struggled with dyslexia”. |
