Positive Steps For Employment

In 2016-17, Dig-iT Adults provided a dyslexic perspective to barriers to employment as part of a consultation with Warwickshire County Council (WCC) Human Resources Department.

This led to WCC developing a policy on the recruitment and retention of people with dyslexia.

Recently, Dig-iT was extremely excited to hear that this work featured as a case study in a report called ‘Neurodiverse Voices: Opening Doors to Employment’ produced by the Westminster AchieveAbility Commission for Dyslexia and Neurodivergence.

Dig-iT is referenced on page 67 as Case Study number 4.

The report aims to highlight the difficulties people with dyslexia experience in looking for work and while employed and how these issues can be dealt with.

Furthermore it calls for “...the improvement of government support programmes and disability initiatives”.

The full report can be accessed here.

A Dig-iT led story-telling and story-making initiative called SPLAT! comes to Tamworth on Saturday 15th July to coincide with Tamworth Library’s launch of their Summer Reading Challenge.

Starting at 10:30 in the morning with workshops and talks in St Editha’s Community Hall and Tamworth Library, the event will bring some fun into the idea that stories aren’t just about words, but pictures, films, spoken word, animation and much more.

The day long event will have professionally led workshops on comic book illustration, animation, children’s books, spoken word, video-making and much more. There will also be talks on being an author and film-making.

Details for all activities and any bookings can be found here.

In addition, at St Editha’s Community Hall there will be a Book Fair selling audio books, graphic novels and comic books as well as other stalls and of course, tea, coffee and cakes on sale!

Finally, in partnership with Tamworth Arts & Events and Community Together CIC, in the Castle Grounds there will be an interactive storyteller in the Bandstand and craft activities in the Community Hub.

Visit the SPLAT! website for full details.

See our Drop-ins page for more information about the new location.

Big thanks to Lee, Steve and the CIC team for accommodating us. We really look forward to seeing you all there from Saturday 24th September.

Dig-iT is pleased to announce that we're soon to launch an adult dyslexia support group in Tamworth! The adult group will start in Autumn 2014 (venue and start date to be confirmed soon).

The new adult dyslexia support group will be free to attend and is an extra service to our regular drop-in sessions. It will offer information on dyslexia traits, a dyslexia screening service, advice and workshops on coping strategies (including assistive technologies) plus information on support in the workplace and in education.

The group will also offer an opportunity for dyslexic adults to meet and socialise with others in a supportive and welcoming environment. It will be run by volunteers who themselves are dyslexic and/or have experience of supporting dyslexic family members.

To find out more, or to join our adult dyslexia group mail list, please email Julie at office.tamdyslexia@gmail.com or call on 0753 451 3338.  We look forward to hearing from you!
